Buyer Tips: Things to Consider When Buying Your Home
Address Change
Medical, Dental, Prescription Histories
- Ask Doctor & Dentist for referrals, transfer needed prescriptions, eyeglasses, x-rays, obtain birth records, medical records, etc.
- Check with your optometrist for your prescription
- Get your pets' records and a letter of reference to a new vet
Miscellaneous
- Obtain school records for your children
- Check if your will must be rewritten moving across state lines
Don't Forget to
- Empty freezer, plan use of foods
- Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator. Place charcoal to dispel odors
- Have appliances serviced for moving
- Check arrangements for TV and cable
- Clean rugs or clothing, have them moving-wrapped
- Plan for special care needs of infants or pets
- Refill drug prescriptions
- Check with moving company; insurance coverage, arrival day, shipping papers, packing and unpacking labor, method of payment
- Have car tuned up if you are driving to new destination
On Moving Day
- Carry enough cash or travelers checks to cover costs of moving services
- Carry jewelry and documents yourself, or use registered mail
- Plan for transporting of pets
- Let close friends or relatives know the route and schedule you will travel including overnight stops. Have one person as message headquarters
- Double check closets, drawers, shelves and attic to be sure they are empty
- Leave old keys, garage door openers, broiler pans, house plans and manuals needed by new owner with realtor in kitchen drawer
At Your New Address
- Obtain certified or cashier's check necessary for closing Real Estate transaction (check with title/escrow company for details)
- Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, water and garbage
- Check hot water heater, furnace and pilot light if gas stove. Check all appliances
- Check post office for any mail being held
- Change address on driver's license
- Register for voting
- Register car within 5 days after arrival to assure license plate requirement is met
- If necessary, obtain inspection sticker and transfer AAA membership
- Apply for state Driver's license
- Register children in school
- Arrange for medical services: doctor, dentist, vet, etc.
- Register family in new place of worship
Bank
- Transfer funds, arrange check-cashing in new city
- Arrange credit references
Insurance
- Notify insurance company of new location (life, health, fire, auto)
Utility Companies
- Gas, lighting, water, telephone, cable
- Get refunds on any deposits made
Pets
- Check regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags, etc.
Delivery Services
- Newspaper, pizza, chinese
